2/11/2002 - ECS - Our new Hudson River Valley Tradewinds Pages are shaping up right now. So surf on back to this page often to see the frequent changes as this page grows over the coming weeks. I have lived in Ulster County for many years, but consider the entire Hudson River Valley to be my home. Here the lofty mountains meet the mighty Hudson River that flows into the sea. Up and down this majestic waterway the goods of commerce once flowed on barges, steamboats and sloops to New York City and from there to be loaded aboard swift sailing ships that carried the goods to the far corners of the world.

The Hudson River Maritime Museum

www.ulster.net/~hrmm

ECS - The Hudson River Maritime Museum officially closed on October 28, 2001 for the season. However their Web site was recently updated and includes a wealth of information and links that are dedicated to the preservation of the maritime history of the Hudson River. Surf on in there and see: Steamboats of the Hudson River, The Rondout: Kingston's Historical District, Henry Hudson and the Half Moon, Mid-Hudson Valley Pre History and Archaeology and lots more.

I got involved with the Museum as a volunteer for the first time this year and it was a woderful experience. I was there for the arrival of the Nina, Christopher Columbus's flag ship. I got some great pictures of this remarkable vessel as well as most of the others that came to visit this historic port of call over this past season. The following photo montage says it all.

Artist's Soapbox Derby

Sunday, August 19th was Artist's Soapbox Derby Day in Kingston, New York down on the Strand and there were thousands of people around. Derby promoter Yourij (George) Donskoj was the master of ceremonies for the occasion. A number of local bands performed. Most notably Thunder Ridge.

The Hudson River Chapter ACBS 18th Annual Antuque and Classic Boat Show and Rendezvous took place along the Kingston City Docks this past August 17 - 19, 2001. I was particularly intrigued with the Klang II featured below. The Klang II is a replica of similar vessels in the clipper ship era that were known in England as "Quay Boats." They would sail out to approaching clipper ships to receive their cargo manifests which they would swiftly convey to London before the clipper ships would arrive at port. Klang II was employed as a coastal patrol boat during World War II. In May, 1940, Klang II was one of a number of civilian craft that aided in the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force from Dunkirk, France as German forces were advancing. There is a feature article about the Klang II in the August 2000 issue of Soundings. Her captain is Rick Hayman who sailed up the Hudson with a number of friends and family from Long Island for the weekend festivities.
